36. Can you please tell me the year Everton became the first team to tour overseas, as Orient claim to have done it in 1904? N.S.N.O. cheers Padda. (31/10/09)

Sting Ray says: Everton are the first league club from England to embark on an overseas tour, according to the ledgers in the David France Collection and now The Everton Collection. In 1904 taking three weeks by sea, rail and horse and cart they were contracted to play eight games during an Austro-Hungarian tour. The first game was played against a team from Budapest, Magyar FC, and saw Everton run out 11-2 winners. Two exhibition games had been arranged against fellow tourist, Tottenham Hotspurs, Everton winning won both of them, 2-0 in Vienna and 1-0 in Prague. The team went on to win the remaining five games of the tour to end a very successful first visit to foreign lands.

35. Has the liver bird ever appeared on any EFC crests, badges motifs, shirts, medals etc in EFC's past history? Norman. (14/10/09)

Sting Ray says: Yes. A liver bird was first seen on an Everton shirt in 1886.

1886

Sting Ray says: Yes. Everton F.C. were founder members of The Football League in 1888 and won their first League Championship three years later. On winning the 1890/91 League Championship, the Football League did not present Everton with any medals. As a result Everton produced this medal for their Championship winning players, which they received along with a cash bonus. The medal features the city of Liverpool’s emblem, a liver bird, to honour the home of Everton F.C. Evertonians are proud to claim the liver bird was first used on their 1890/91 League Championship medal – a year before the team across the park were formed.

Even as late as 1915, the Blue Liver Bird Was put on a medal.

You can buy a copy of the 1890/91 Blue Liver Bird Medal from evertondirect for £12.99.

Sting Ray says: If you examine the Parish records for the 1890s (which are available online) you will find that the area was sold to the club by the local landowner who was a Mr. Goodison - so there's your answer. (There was also a local gent called Spellow!). You will also be interested to know that the streets to the West of the ground (i.e. from Park End northwards towards Gwladys Street and beyond to the end of Walton Rd are named after the Welsh builders of the houses - Wilfred Owen... take the first letter of each of these streets..
