Everton:
Howard, Neill, Yobo, Distin, Baines, Heitinga, Rodwell, Bilyaletdinov Bench: Saha (Fellaini), Jo (Yakubu), Nash, Gosling, Coleman, Duffy, Agard Referee: Tony Prostrate We needed a result from this one after three straight defeats and I was delighted to see that Baines was back after injury as we’d conceded 10 goals in those three defeats. We’re definitely missing Jags so roll on month end and his return. With him and Distin, Baines and Neill we should be totally solid once again at the back. Heitinga got the crowd singing his name when he put the frighteners on Young and then won a great block tackle with Milner. The Villa player was limping badly, but Johnny got on with it. The first twenty minutes of the game we dominated with Yakubu and Fellaini looking lively and both having a couple of chances but failing to capitalise on them. Heitinga was impressive with solid passing and adding a little much needed creativity to our performance. Overall there was little between the two teams until stoppage time at the end of the first half when Cahill crossed the ball to Yakubu, Bily took the ball and sent it goal bound with a side footed effort, 1-0 just before the break, happy days. Half Time EVERTON 1 Villa 0 Within a minute of the second half getting underway we were back level as Carew, who had come on for the injured Milner scored when Howard failed to keep hold of the ball he saved from Agbonlahor. Again we had some chances with Cahill coming close after a great cross from Baines and Rodwell shot wide. Saha came on for Fellaini midway into the second half to try and clinch the three points but hopes of that were dashed when the ever improving little Russian was given a straight red for a two footed lunge on Petrov, who managed to get up before realising he had a chance of getting our most creative player punished and then went back down like a sack of spuds. Minutes later a challenge on Yakubu by Cuellar, his second yellow, saw him also leave the park early. Both decisions a little harsh particularly Bily which should have been a yellow and now means he misses three games. The media seem to go on about the likes of Villa, Spurs, and Man City being challenging for the top 4 spots and have forgotten about Everton. This Villa side was at full strength today, and we were the better side without question. With Arteta, Jagielka, and Pienaar back in the side we will be flying. Plus Osman, Neville, Vaughan and Anichebe to join the squad, silver ware may still be a possibility. Another 1-1 result, the third consecutive but we played well, better than we’ve seen in a while. Starman a tough decision as there were some pretty good performances today from Bily, the Yak and Neill, but I thought Heitinga had his best game of the season for us. He defended, tackled and put some great crossing in and therefore gets my vote. Full Time EVERTON 1 Villa 1

Moyesy says: "I don't think either goalkeeper had a great deal of saves to make. The teams are well matched, but we are not playing with a great deal of confidence. We are a little bit out of shape at the moment. I thought
we nullified Aston Villa quite well but I didn't think we were able
to play our game because at this moment in time, without one or two
players who might change things for us, it makes our set-up slightly
different. I wanted us to keep a clean sheet more than anything today.
I wanted us to not concede a goal and I thought if we could do that
we could win the game." (31/10/09) |

Eh if it does not rain it pours. Three defeats on the bounce, still upwards of ten players out, knocked out of the Carling Cup, but we still battle on. Moyesy still has to do without the services of Ossie, Billy, Bainsey, Nuts and Joey, as well as long termers Phil, The Jag and Mikky. We are at the barest of bare bones, and even the biggest squad would find it hard to cope with that level of quality out. We face Villa, and it is anyone's guess who Moyesy put out on the field tomorrow, but it looks likely that Lucas Neill will make his Goodison bow in the home clash against the Midlanders. The Blues will be glad to see the back of October, which ironically was a month we looked at pre season, and thought a good points tally was coming our way. Defeats, home draws, Cup exit and a bashing in Europe all came in October. Now we face Villa on the last day of the month, a team who apart form our Cup win at Goodison last season, we have not done well against lately. This is the most played fixture in English football, with Villa ahead with 71 wins to our 70 with 47 draws.

Apart from last season's Cup win at Goodison on our way to Wembley, the Blues have found Villa a hard nut to crack of late with three losses and three draws in our last six Prem encounters. With home advantage though, the Blues are slight favourites at 6/4 for the win, Villa are priced up at 11/5, with the draw at 12/5. Something we have not had since September 26th is a clean sheet, which is surprising when Moyesy builds his side on a solid defence. For the lads to achieve that today you can get a tasty 9/4, but the bookies taking our recent defensive form into consideration price up goals against us at 2/5. So then if its goals you fancy, and remember last season in three matches, it averaged five goals per game, so to get over 3.5 goals today you can get a nice earner of 3/1 on Betfair. King Louis and The Yak are priced up at 6/1 and 7/1 respectively, with Tiny coming in at 10/1. Good luck, me thinks we will need it today. Villa have a fully fit squaaaaaad ahead of the Goodison clash against the Blues. The only minor doubt is ex shit ed Stephen Warnock who has an ankle injury. Nicky Shorey is on standby. Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel is expected to make his 200th successive Premier League appearance. Mild Mannered Martin says: "The two league games against them were brilliant. We played a magnificent game up at Goodison Park and they responded by going a couple of goals in front down here in the return game. We fought back and it was a draw, but they were really, really good matches. To win there in the circumstances in which we did do is as satisfying and rewarding as you can get. They beat us of course, in the FA Cup, so from that viewpoint we have to go back to Goodison Park and put things right, if at all possible. I just find that even though the results at the moment might not be going their way, there is a resilience about them. They bounce back and they use these things to foster team spirit, which they have plenty of. They showed that last season. They ended up finishing fifth, pipping us, and reaching the cup final. So I think they will obviously be disappointed by recent results but they are far from down. They have shown in the last couple of seasons the sort of spirit they have there and I think that has been a hallmark of their game." (31/10/09) |
