Europa League - The Format

The UEFA Europa League 2009–10 is the new name for the UEFA Cup. It will be in a new format to make it mirror the Champions League. The final will be played in Hamburg, Germany on Wednesday 12th May 2010, the home of Hamburg SV.

Play Off Round Draw

The draw will take place at 12.30pm on Friday 7th August 2009 for the play-off round of the Europa League takes place on Friday. Everton are seeded and will not meet teams from the same country. * * * The group stage of the competition will consist of 12 groups of 4 teams.

They will be:

10 losers from the UEFA Champions League 2009–10 play-off round
38 winners from the play-off round


During this stage of the tournament, matches will feature five on-field officials - with two additional officials monitoring play around the penalty box as part of a FIFA-sanctioned experiment.


* * * The following teams are expected to participate in the final knockout phase:

12 group winners from the group stage
12 group runners-up from the group stage
8 third-placed teams from the UEFA Champions League 2009–10 group stage
